Where is Hugh Rose Smith in 1871? .....

Post by LesleyB » Fri Mar 24, 2006 8:49 pm

I've been searching for this guy on and off for over a year now and have used up any spare credits whenever I've had a few to use up on SP checking for him over that period. Am thoroughly stuck as I just can't find him, so thought I'd run it by you all and see if anyone can come up with any suggestions. Here is a little of his background:

1848 Born 25 June , Hill of Fearn, Ross and Cromarty (Free Church, Fearn, CH3/962/8 so not on IGI or SP)

1851 census, Fearn, enumeration district 2.
Hugh (2 years) is living with his father Hugh, an agricultural labourer and Anne, his mother, at Garrick. Older sister Lilly (aged 5) is a scholar, and younger brother Andrew is aged 4 months.

1861 His father Hugh has died and Anne, aged 36, a widow, is now head of the household. Hugh aged 12 and Andrew aged 10 are both scholars. Sister Lily is working as a cook & domestic servant for James Duff aged 71, her great grand-uncle uncle, at Ballindrum, near Fearn.

Hugh must have moved south to Edinburgh between 1861 and 1879. Sister Lily moved to Edinburgh between 1861 and 1869, so it may be that they travelled south together?

1871 - mother Anne in Fearn Census. Lily in Edinburgh. Brother Andrew is in Kilmuir Easter working as a gardener at Balnagown Castle. Hugh may be in Edinburgh for this census, but is not at the address given at the time of his marriage in 1879, 77 Cumberland Street. Should be aged 22. However, given his occupation of mason, he could be anywhere....as is illustrated by the 1881.

1879 - At time of marriage living at 77 Cumberland Street, Edinburgh.

1881 Hugh was a Mason in Jedburgh, aged 31, married but living as a lodger at 1 Lanton Hall with a family called Burrell.

Hugh SMITH M 31 M Fearn, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland
Rel: Lodger
Occ: Mason
His wife, Elizabeth was in Edinburgh with their daughter, Elizabeth, at 29 India Place.

1889 Hugh died in Edinburgh, aged 40. (says aged 38 on his death entry)

In the 1871 census he is NOT any of the following:
1 1871 SMITH HUGH M 22 SANDAY /ORKNEY
2 1871 SMITH HUGH M 23 ARBROATH /ANGUS
3 1871 SMITH HUGH M 21 ST PETER DUNDEE CITY/ANGUS
4 1871 SMITH HUGH M 22 DUMBARTON /DUNBARTON
5 1871 SMITH HUGH M 21 CAMPBELTOWN /ARGYLL
6 1871 SMITH HUGH M 21 GREENOCK EAST /RENFREW
7 1871 SMITH HUGH M 21 BARRHEAD /RENFREW
8 1871 SMITH HUGH M 23 AYR /AYR
9 1871 SMITH HUGH M 22 IRVINE /AYR
10 1871 SMITH HUGH M 23 CALDERHEAD /LANARK
11 1871 SMITH HUGH M 23 DOUGLAS /LANARK
12 1871 SMITH HUGH M 21 TRADESTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK
13 1871 SMITH HUGH M 21 CANONGATE EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN
14 1871 SMITH HUGH M 23 CANONGATE EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN
15 1871 SMITH HUGH M 21 COLDSTREAM /BERWICK
16 1871 SMITH HUGH M 21 COLDSTREAM /BERWICK

Any suggestions gratefully received. Usually I'd be thinking alternative spellings - but with "Hugh Smith" the options seem limited... all I can think is that his age has been mistranscribed ...or his name is illegible.
Stockbridge area is the most likely in Edinburgh as this is the area most strongly associated with his sister Lily and her in-laws the Dicks.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley

This seems like the proverbial needle in a haystack job. As you know I've got Edinburgh connections and Ross connections in Ross and Cromarty in my own family, so I'll keep half and eye open for your "Hugh Smith". I consider myself very fortunate to only have one Smith who marries into my family and two Browns

Like you tell the rest of us - don't give up!

Liz

PS - India Place rings a bell for some reason - I've lots of Edinburgh people and while I'm on holiday next week plan to organise my notes etc, I've been following the post on the site about that very subject. Mine are all in no particular order in several boxes! At least my sister has a copy of the PC stuff in case something happens to either hers or mine!
