Help needed for Census Information .....

Post by LesleyD » Sun Feb 19, 2006 10:18 am

Hello,

This my first post here and I was hoping someone might be able to help me find the right Parishes so I can look up the 1861 census.
I have some old letters written in the 1850's from Teandalloch, Urray. They mention one ancestor Peter Chisholm living in Geddes. I can not find that place name anywhere. Peter's brother Kenneth is stated as living in "Aurgoilshire" and Wester Lovat. Would this mean Wester Lovat in Kirkhill Parish, Argyleshire? Hope someone can help.

Cheers

Hi Lesley,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

Urray was a parish straddling the Inverness / Ross and Cromarty county boundary. It was generally considered as being in Roass and Cromarty.

Geddes is south of Nairn and looks to be in Nairn parish, Nairnshire.

Kirkhill parish was in Inverness-shire, not Argyll(shire). So that one will take more looking at.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hello Lesleyd,
I'm sure someone will give you info re parishes but...........

For the moment I wouldn't be too worried about parishes when searching for Peter and Kenneth.
There are only 22 Kenneth and 17 Peter Chisholms in Scotland in 1861.

Have a look at all the results and then choose.

Annette M
