Irregular death - drowning.....

Post by VMilligan » Mon Oct 17, 2005 12:43 pm

Hi all,

I could use a little bit of advice. As far as I know, my great great grandfather, Jacob George Johnston Milligan (married to Elspeth Ferguson Hay) was murdered in 1920 either on January 1st/2nd aged 63. As family legend goes, he was a cab driver and was beaten up by three men then thrown into the River Cairns, Parish of Holywood in Dumfries where he drowned.

I have an extract of his death certificate which states cause of death as "Drowning - Body seen after death 3/1/1920" written at the side of the entry there is a paragraph that reads:
"See Reg: of Cori(?): Entries Vol I, Page 64, 23 Feb, 1920"
I was just wondering what this is exactly refering to, and if there is anyway of accessing it?

Also, is there anyway to discover is there was a trial and/or newspaper reports relating to this alleged crime?

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Verity Milligan

Hello VMilligan,
Welcome to Talking Scot.I think you may find a newspaper article on your Jacob Milligan in "The Scotsman " Digital Archives. The article was written 5 Jan 1920 . There is a link to this site in the Talking Scot sources.
Hope this helps,
HeatherK

Hello again VMilligan,
I forgot to mention the "See Reg: of Cori(?): Entries Vol I, Page 64, 23 Feb, 1920" that you mention is a reference to an RCE or Register of Corrected Entries. You can indeed view these at New Register House in Edinburgh.
Happy Hunting,
HeatherK
