I have the birth date of a child born in 1917 and know the mothers name and address but the child was un named in the document I have. Does anyone know if it is possible to trace the child. I believe that the child died in infancy.
Many thanks

Hi gail
A search on the online indexes at Scotlands People may be of some help, depending on what you know already.
Best wishes

If you were able to visit to NRH you may well be able to find the original birth entry using the surname and the area where you know the event took place. You would be able to see the mother's name on any likely looking entry.Does anyone know if it is possible to trace the child.

Check Death certificates for the same day and a few days after the birth.
While there is a special register for still births, if a baby was born living but died a few hours later both a birth and death certificate are required. This is the ONLY reason for unnamed children that I've come across.

Birth of Un-named Child
I wonder if it might have been common practice not to name a child born who was unlikely to live. I have one who lived for 3 days and was never given a name.
Would it have been different in the Catholic Church where, I believe baptism is a pre requisite for entry to heaven?

There are several un-named children in parts of my tree. All seem to have died in infancy.
However I have been trying for some years to trace my grandmothers twin who was still born. They were born in 1915. I can not find a birth or a death for this child. What would have happened to it? No record of it being buried either. Where would I find the records for still born babies?

Hi ,
Stillborn babies didn't have to be registered until 1939 according to this...

Try a google search - you might find a couple of interesting articles.

stillborn records
Hello
I was interested to know whether I'd had a twin as there had been vague overheard conversations in the family. I contacted New Register House and was able to get the information from the stillbirth register. As both my parents are deceased I was able to access this information for an £8 fee and a copy of my birth cert. So it may be possible that you can get the info from them. I'ts worth a try anyway.
