1841 census on Ancestry? .....

Have just quickly checked this out and have found a couple of rellies I didn't know existed! Isn't it nice to have a freebie to search

The images are very much Crown Copyright

, and, as far as GROS are concerned, only currently available via SP.

Ancestry had some Fife 1841 census info on their site over 5 years ago - and then it mysteriously disappeared!

Just found some elusive people who I had been unable to pinpoint on SP search! Kind of proves what I was saying in a previous post on another thread! Hope they do it for all the censuses???

Hello All,

I've had a look too, and to be honest, despite some of the dodgy spellings of my surname, I've found it considerably more useful than the index on SP. I know you can't see the actual images, however having a transcription is mightily useful, and I can then go onto SP to see the pages if I need to and not waste loads of credits on 'possible' matches. Being able to search by birth county and occupation is very handy. I'm sure there's a good explanation, but I'm wondering why SP couldn't add these two particular search fields, when Ancestry seem to have managed it?

Having this kind of index for 1851 would be a godsend!

Off for a freebie look at my FHC tom.I have a limited subscription which I took out to make contact with somebody else searching one of my lines(they didn't get back to me!)My contacts have been on the General Boards which are free but I live in hope that some day!!!
There are too many possibilities for my GGrandfather but I am hoping to disprove my growing thought that he had two homes on the go by 1850ish.

Wow! I didn't know about this! It is wonderful to be able to search without knowing the surname-- I wish one had that flexibility on all of the sites (and all of the censuses). Besides a few oddities like "Old MacHar" for the Old Machar area of Aberdeen (sounds more Scots, I suppose with that initial "Mac"

) the index looks quite nice. It will help narrow down the search before purchasing the image on SP.

I can't get a search result at all. I admit I am not a member, but I am not even getting that page where it tells you what they have! All I get is a page telling me to get a subscription etc.

I just received my email notification (somewhat after the event) and it said
We’re pleased to notify you of the arrival of the 1841 Scottish census- the first in a series of census releases for Scotland from Ancestry.co.uk. so presumably they are going to index more. No mention of images.

Must admit, I initially wasn't keen on ancestry - but the UK subscription with all the census data and easy access to FreeBDM and the full England/Wales Index has been much cheaper than pay to view options. Now that Scotland is available as well ... I think I picked a good year to join
