Hi David,
Thank you so much, so far I have managed to get a bit more together (everyone who has come in the house today has had a go)
"In an action relating to the paternity of Hugh Somerville born February 6th 1856 at the instance of John Somerville of Burnside or Burnford against James Davidson [3 or 4 words I cannot read] near Lanark both in the parish of Lesmahagow the [unreadable] substitute [unreadable] at Lanark found that this male child was the [unreadable] male child of the parties aforesaid. [Unreadable] date 24 March 1857. (April 4th 1857). Initialled."
So getting there,
Thanks everyone,
Audrey

Hi Audrey,
The middle section is "the Sheriff Substitute of Lanarkashire". Giving you:
- "In an action relating to the paternity of Hugh Somerville born February 6th 1856 at the instance of John Somerville of Burnside or Burnford against James Davidson, Cotton [____] in Teaths near Lanark both in the parish of Lesmahagow the Sheriff Substitute of Lanarkshire at Lanark found that this said child was the illegitimate child of the parties aforesaid. Lanark[?] 24 March 1857. (April 4th 1857). Initialled."
Teaths can be found on the Lesmahagow (west) side of Lanark on

All the best,

The text for a paternity RCE was laid out by the Registration of Births, Deaths & Marriages Act (Scotland) 1854 in the form of Schedule F.
- Register of Corrected Entries for the District of [Registration District] in the County of [County]
In the Fourth Column of Entry No.[xxx] in the Register Book of Births for the year [xxxx], before the name of the Child's mother, insert [father's name], [father's occupation], on the authority of a Certificate in the Form of Schedule F to the following effect,
In an action relating to the Paternity of a [Male/Female] child, born at [birthplace] in the Parish of [Registration District] in the County of [County], on the {xx] day of [month] [year] at the instance of [mother's name], [mother's occupation, if any], [mother's residence], against [father's name], [father's occupation], residing at [father's residence], the Sheriff Substitute of [county/counties] on the [xx] day of [month] [year], found that the said child was the illegitimate child of the said [mother's name] and [father's name].
[date registered] at [place of Registrar's office].
[registrar's signature]
Registrar
[date examined]
[examiner's signature]
The text on this birth certificate seems to be based on that text.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Brilliant
The only outstanding word is that second part of James' occupation, - it looks like the word starts with an "A" but I'm d****d if I can imagine what the word is, - the most frequent would be "Weaver", other possibilities Spinner, Dyer, Tenter, and a few more, but I can't "see" such, if you see what I mean
