I have a link to this family via Christina Bolan. Haven't had a chance to digest the thread in detail but John McAulay was born 3 Nov 1885 at Newarthill.

I'll have a dig through my other notes, and see what I can add.

Excellent -- that is indeed him, but I can't find a birth certificate for him and I have tried every combination of spelling that I can think of.

I have the following children for the family. I'm not saying these are definitive, as this family is only very distantly related to me:

Jeanie McAulay born 25 Aug 1884, Newarthill, died 24 Dec 1888 Uphall
John McAulay born 3 Nov 1885, Newarthill (year and place were wrong in the info you were given. There is a Larkhall connection as the family were there in 1901)
William Arthur McAulay born 15 Nov 1887 Newarthill (your contact has that one correct)
George McAulay 14 Jan 1890, West Houston, Uphall (your contact had date but not the place correct, although maybe he meant Linlithgowshire?)

I don't have a Christina, but that doesn't mean she didn't exist. Out of curiosity I did have a quick look for her death cert and couldn't see one.

You'll find John's birth cert under MCAULAY.

I think you're absolutely correct to be cautious and check the facts. I think I remember there were some dodgy trees on Ancestry relating to Christina Bolan's family but I don't know if they are the same source.

Thank you very much for that. I have now located John's birth certificate. Jeanie is a new one on me, but her birth certificate confirms she was the daughter of William and Christina.

Just in case I confused things by stating I wasn't sure the children I have are "definitive", I meant there may be others. I have checked all the certificates listed and all these children do have the correct parents.

He married (1) Christina Bolan 06 Nov 1883 in Johnstone, Renfrew, SCOT, GBR20, daughter of Arthur Bolan and Jane Bilch. She was born 07 Jun 1864 in Bowhousebog, Shotts, Calderhead, Lanark, SCOT, GBR and died 03 Feb 1890 in West Houston, Uphall, Linlithgow, SCOT, GBR.

He married (2) Matilda Thomson 22 Jul 1890 in St. John's Church, Johnstone, Renfrew, SCOT, GBR25,26, daughter of Thomas Thomson and Agnes Cameron.
She was born Abt. 1865, and died 04 Dec 1925 in Springfield, Sangamon Co., Illinois USA. He married (3) Ada Ellen Bresaw(mdname).

Children of William McAulay and Christina Bolan are:

18 i. Christina McAulay.

Thanks for the reply -- I have made a little progress with my quest but I will study your details later tonight.

My link is via your #19 John B McAuley. He married my ggAunt Janet Russell. I note your have his birth as 3 Nov 1884, whereas I have it as 3 Nov 1885. This is interesting as I have seen several references to 1884 however I finally found his birth certificate and it is 1885
