Thanks all for your help so far with this one.
I am however still looking for the marriage cert between Thomas and Ann, the date on several children's birth certs was 14th or 15th April 1851, shortly after the census that year. Holytown, Bothwell, Old Monkland, and Woodhall have all been given as where the marriage took place.
I wouldn't ask again but I am really stuck, I've gone as far as I can, and I still can't find Ann's birth either.
SOS!

Hi Katjw
Do you happen to know if the family were Established Church or perhaps belonged to another church e.g. Methodist, Espiscoplian, RC, Free Church etc. If they were anything other than plain old vanilla "Church of Scotland" it is very likely that they will not turn up in the OPRs.
If any of their children later married in Scotland or indeed any siblings of the couple(after 1855) , the clues may lie there if you are not sure, as the Church should be stated.
Best wishes
Lesley
p.s. I'm finding a death of a Crawford Snadden b. 1821 +/- 5yrs on SP, but seems to be female

Thanks Leslie,
I thought it might be something like that. I don't have all the marriages of their children but what I do have are fc of Scotland. You've given me something to go on with though, will search sideways as you suggested for the siblings marriages. Just so frustrating when I have the date and location!
They are a stubborn pair, these two!

One of Ann's brothers is a Crawford, maybe it's a cousin. Unusual name I thought, interesting to find where it originated from. Another thing to investigate!

Hi Katrina
but what I do have are fc of Scotland
If you mean by that that they were Free Church of Scotland then that will explain them not turning up in the OPRs. The Free Church broke away from the Established Church in The Disruption of 1843, so there will most likely be no mention of your births, marriages or deaths for your family from 1843 until 1855 when Statutory Registration began, and of course, it no longer mattered which religion you were as it was no longer the church who was recording the data.
There are Free Church records, as some Free Churches started their own registers - most of them are at NAS but none are as yet available online.
Best wishes

Thanks Lesley - you answered my next question without me having to ask it!
My one criticism of Scotlands People is that I can't find much mention of what records they don't have online. I will try the NAS - I have a feeling I'm going to have a long list for them.
Do you know if the info contained in the records would have much detail or is it dependant on the parish record keepers as to how much information was collected like the OPR's?
Thanks again,
Katrina

Hi Katrina

You already knew the answer already!! It will depend a lot on whether they were kept at all and how well they were kept if there are any, just like OPRs.
Best wishes
