following up tips on Mary McPhail -meaning of Truine

Post by sheilago » Fri Sep 28, 2007 12:28 pm

I have looked at the entry in 1881 census. I do wonder if this could be Mary And Annie. Annie was widowed by then (but is listed as married- a mistake?) It gives Annie's name as Truine, but I've done some searching and can't come across this as a name existing in Scotland at all - another mistake? Can anyone think where 'Truine' could have come from - I know the 1881 census has been transcribed so maybe errors occurred.
I Know Annie was illiterate so mistakes could have been made. Also she was a native Gaelic speaker. She did come from Islay(Kilarrow) so that is correct. She also worked as a washer/cleaner as that was her occupation at her second marriage. I've also found out that Alma St was a bit of a centre for people from Islay who were working in shipyards - so this fits as Annie and perhaps John MCPhail were from Islay and he probably worked in ship yards(boilermaker).
Many thanks, Sheila

It is more than possible that the 'Truine' shown on Ancestry is actually a mistranscribed "Irvine" Not an uncommon occurance!

The actual image of the census on SP will give you a better idea of what it really says.

Have you looked at the marriage entry between Annie McMillan and Mr Irvine in 1878? This should confirm (or not ) whether this is you Annie in 1881.

Hi Sheila,
Here's your G-GM Mary McPHAIL's birth.
Annette, she's just the right age for the Mary you found in 1881....
Later; and mother Ann's surname then is definitely as IRVINE.

MARY FRASER McMILLAN - Birth: 21 SEP 1873, Clyde, Glasgow, Lanark
Parents: Father not named. Mother ANN McMILLAN

Thanks to Jack and others - found my gt grandmother!

 Many thanks to everyone - especially Jack. This entry in sept 1873 is my great grandmother. She was born illegitimately , 21 months after her mother's husband's death and registered in her mother's maiden name.. Interesting that she later used the name McPhail and listed Jihn McPhail as her father. I wonder if she ever realised that this was impossible!
I have tried searching for marriages of Ann McMillan/McPhail after this date, but so far haven't found a likely marriage. The marriage to a Mr Irvine in 1878 doesn't seem to be my Ann McMillan(much too young and a spinster).
I presume that the Fraser in Mary's name at birth might be a clue to her real father's name.
Many thanks once again - can't believe I've finally found this after months of puzzling over it.
