Hi Lesley

Im double checking 1881 census. At first i couldnt find her ( not thinking the teacher on 1881 could be the same Pauper that died 1888  ) So looked up the George Innes that was informant on her death certificate and a few doors away is Jane McPherson retired teacher.
I was wondering if it could be dumb school.

Thanks

Sorry I'm not sure what Jane formerly was though I agree the last word looks like school.

Do you think the Registar started to write Donaldson and changed his mind to McPherson?

Hello Pinkshoes

Possibly. I have been contacted in the past by someone who had information claiming her husband was David McPherson. I havnt found evidence of this marriage so far and have yet to find them together or apart on ANY census  :!: as proof.

Many thanks

Hi Tracey

I'm not 100% sure about dance, but I don't think its dumb because there is no evidence of an ascender for the b at the end of dumb. (unless it was there, its just we can't see it! :? )

best wishes
Lesley

Hi Tracey, I think it is a ''DAME'' school. various definitions are given on the web, but basically private schooling for the basic 3 'r's , often in the teachers own home.

Hi Ian
I think it is a ''DAME'' school
Is that where folk go to learn about acting in panto?
Apologies & its the wrong time of year..... just couldn't resist it!

Found at:
http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/EDdame.htm
Dame Schools was a common tern used to describe small private schools that provided an education for working class children before they were old enough to work. These schools were usually run by an elderly woman who taught the children to read and write and other useful skills such as sewing. Fees were about 3d. a week and the quality of education that the children received varied enormously. Whereas some teachers provided a good education, others were no more than child-minders.
Best wishes
Lesley
