Tried to upload copy of registration cert.....

Hi Everyone,

I have just tried to upload a birth registration with lots written at the edge that I cant read (poor old soul) blind as a bat I hear you say

Problem is it did not work. Help amy ideas as to how I can do it.

Hello Audrey,

Are you trying to upload it to the gallery?
If so just click on upload, then browse your computer till you find the image you want then, click continue - you image should be uploaded and then you can give it a name.

I did it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Took a few goes but eventually managed to do it I just hope someone can now help me in reading it.

Hi Audrey,

You have an item written in the margin that should really have been an RCE. I believe in the early years of Statutory Registration this was not uncommon as the system must have taken a bit of getting used to.

I will have a go at deciphering, but it won't be easy.

In an action relating to the paternity of a Hugh Sommerville born February 6th 1856, at ...

Here's hoping someone else can get the rest of it decoded for you.

Following that is the place of birth I assume and then against James Davidson ?Cotton? ....... near Lanark.

Not much help I'm afraid. It mentions Lanark again further on.
What was the mother's name - I can't fit the image in my window.

Thank you for trying Mothers name was Helen Sommerville and I think the case was brought by John Sommerville who was Helen's fathers brother.

It's an early "RCE", - in the very early years there was some confusion over when an RCE should be used.

Sometimes, as in this case, the text that would have appeared in the RCE entry, appeared instead on the margin of the register entry.

I'd need to see the original microfiche or the register to be 100% certain, but basically Helen took a patermity action against James Davidson in the Lanark Sheriff Court to prove that he was the father.

Much of the text is standard "blurb".........
