Hi Carole,

My interpretation is:

Tubercular Disease of Iliac Bone (2 years)
Diarrhoea and Exhaustion

and from the dictionary:
Ilium: the bone that unites the ischium and pubis to form the innominate bone.
Ischium: a posterior bone of the pelvic girdle

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Many thanks Andrew.

William's brother John (my GGrandfather) died at the age of 26 in 1911 of tuberculosis of the spine. Anyone know if this kind of tuberculosis is hereditary :?:

Tuberculosis is not hereditary it's caused by a germ (bacteria).
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

As one who used to work in a Chest Unit which dealt with TB,I have come across many misconceptions about it.
One is that the disease is hereditary-its not but as over-crowed,badly nourished, over worked conditions that our ancestors often lived in bred the infection & the misconception that it could be "passed on" which it could be but in an infectious rather than a Genetic way.
The germ is most famous for its Pulmonary variety but it can attack the bone & other organs before the advent of Antibiotics & Anti-Tuberclar drugs TB was the HIV of its time.
Like most germs we are more able to fight its affects when we live in sanitary conditions with good ventilation, eat a nourishing diet, rest & have fun. Many people didnt have these priveleges & so it was endemic.
It has made a comeback these days due to a generation growing up having never having known this scourge & being less vigilant, not bothering about their BCGs,our love of exotic travel & the influx of people from areas in the World where TB is still a major problem.
So if you have a persistent cough, night sweats, chest pain, weight loss see your GP & have a chest X-ray.Usually a course of medication will cure it. :!:
