Elizabeth Mills married James Paterson 6/5/1854 in Kirknewton and East Calder (IGI)
I have found her in 1851 shown as Elizabeth Miln (18) servant in Stankards Uphall. The reason I am quite sure this is her is that her future husband is there too, James Paterson (24) servant. I have them both in Stankards Cottages, Uphall in 1861, also in 1871. Elizabeth is 28 and 38 respectively. James dies in 1877. Elizabeth is enumerated twice in 1881. Once in Stankards Cottages with 4 of her children, age shown as 57 which is incorrect. Second in Edinburgh with her married daughter Elizabeth Ramsay, shown as mother in law to the head of the household, aged 48. In 1891 she is living at 187 Mid St, Broxburn aged 58.So her age is farily consistent in all the censuses. By the way I haven't traced her i n 1901. Her year of birth is therefore about 1833. So far so good.
I have even seen her headstone in Strathbrock Kirkyard. Date of death/burial is shown as 7/4/1914. She is buried with her husband. This info is also shown in the West Lothian Monumental Inscriptions.
So why can't I find her death cert? I have tried Eli*abeth Pat*erson with the year of death as 1914. Also tried Eliza/Liz/Lizzie. As her maiden name is slightly suspect Mills/ Miln, perhaps even Milne I have tried variations of both and have left this blank too. Still no luck.
Any help appreciated. She is so well documented, other than her birth and more importantly her death. It's so annoying when you have the actual date!!!

I see her son registered the death, and his address is not given as different from the place of death, so Markinch may well have been his home at that time and his mother was living there at the time of her death.
A Paterson marriage in Kirknewton & East Calder woke up my interest. My Patersons were in that area at that time. On looking a bit closer, James's birthplace is given on their son's 1855 birth certificate - Bo'ness - less likely to be one of my lot. James junior didn't survive long - there is an 1855 death certificate for him. James senior's 1879 death certificate gives a father's name, but no mother's name. Do you know who his parents were (John Paterson and ?????)?
All the best,

Hi Andrew
James was born 3/6/1821 in Livingston. I know he states that he was born in Bo'ness in the 1861 and 1871 censuses. His youngest brother, Malcolm was the only one born in Bo'ness 20/6/1828. Think James must have assumed he was born there too.
His parents were John Paterson and Helen Cunningham.
I think we tried to find out some time ago if our Patersons were connected, but drew a blank.
Best wishes
Jean
