How can I find who was living at 33 West Russell Street in the Milton District of Glasgow in the 1901 Census?
I have a relative, Margaret Donnochie, who died there in 1908. The informant was a nephew from Kilmarnock. This is a bit odd as her husband, Peter, was still alive in the Kilmarnock area, living with his mother. I think Margaret and Peter had been living apart for some time as I can find no trace of Margaret after the birth of their son Hugh in 1879.
The possible variations of the surname does not make searching easy.
I have tried on SP and on Ancestry.

At Ancestry try Lanarkshire in the county box and 33 W Russell in the address. It gives 45 people -no Donnachies -but you might see something obvious.Hugo wrote:How can I find who was living at 33 West Russell Street in the Milton District of Glasgow in the 1901 Census?

What was her maiden name?

Annette,
Many thanks for your promt and informative reply.
Her maiden name was Biggins.
I suspected I was not asking the right question on Ancestry. I shall take another look when I get the chance.
With 45 people there then it could be an institution.

Annette,
I had not thought about Margaret using her maiden name but it does make sense. Knowing she was born about 1854, I can chase her on SP - I am still not getting good results on Ancestry.
Her death certificate does not give any occupation. I am not sure what the implications of that are. Something else for me to think about.

It may not be her as the age is way out - I was hoping an occupation was given on the death entry you have. Anyway, here is the info from Ancestry -
Name: Margaret Biggins
Age: 35
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1856
Relationship: Serv (Servant)
Gender: Female
Where born: Kilmarnock, Ayrshire
Registration Number: 644/7
Registration district: Blythswood
Civil parish: Glasgow St George

I thought it was interesting since your Margaret Biggins born Kilmarnock around 1851 died not too far from there.
Regards,
Annette

Hello Hugo,
I don’t know whether this has any connection or will be any help at all but there’s a spicy little item in the Glasgow Herald, Thursday, August 7, 1884.
KILMARNOCK.—A MATRIMONIAL DIFFICULTY. —
At the Sheriff Court yesterday two cases of assault were disposed of arising out of the recent matrimonial difficulty in the neighbourhood of Galston, in which the bridegroom, at the last moment, after the guests had assembled, refused to allow the ceremony to proceed, in consequence of the want of satisfactory evidence of the actual existence of a marriage dowry of some £3000 or £4000 that had been promised him by the bride. The parties are two farm servants, named Margaret Biggins and William Bole, who at the date in question were in service in adjoining farms in this district. Biggins was charged yesterday with having assaulted Bole on the road from the farm of West Overland on June 29 last by tearing the buckle or strap from his waist, biting him on the thigh, and attempting to throw upon him a jug of vitriol. She pled not guilty, but was convicted, and fined in £2, or 20 days' imprisonment. Bole was charged with having, on the 21st ult., at the farm of Netherland, assaulted Biggins by knocking her down and kicking her. He pled not guilty, but was convicted, and fined in £1, or ten days' imprisonment.
If you think it may be relevant and you want the image just send me an email address via PM.
Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Greetings,
Annette
I have found her on Ancestry (Why not on SP?) and she is not the Margaret I am looking for; not only her age but my Margaret was born in Galston.
Your help is appreciated.
Currie
I laughed when I read newspaper report. Fortunately Peter Donachie and Margaret Biggins were married in 1876 and had a son in 1979. So I don't think it is the Margaret I am looking for.
Thanks anyway.
