hi everybody,
As it's says i did ask this question a while back, but it's been lost when the site went down, but it's been playing on my mind (driving me insane) more like so i thought i'd try again!
I have a Robert Miller Thomson marrying a Ella McVean in 1905, she states her parents as being John McVean and Margaret m.s. Mcgregor both deseased, do you think i can find hind or hair of her parents??? Can i heckers like!
I have tried every spelling combo i can think of for McVean, MacVean, Mcvane, Mcvain etc.etc. but not a jot! I've tried cencus wedding and death records for them both!
Any help, advice or pointers would be gratefully recieved!
Thanks in advance, (I'm an opptomist!), spelling!
Susan.
P.S. Ella states her birthplace as Lough Tummel c1882 can't find this either!
Tried this before!

Ella and her parents are good at hiding. I tried various spellings - *ella to catch Isabella, Annabella and the like and tried M*Vean/Veen, M*Bean/Been and M*Gregor with no luck. Then I tried for a death certificate for the mother with the M*Vean variants above with other surname M*Gregor and nothing useful turned up.
In terms of parishes, Loch Tummel should be in Dull or Blair Atholl, with and outside possibility of Fortingall, Moulin or Weem. I kept an open mind for any parishes (or registration districts) of that part of Perthshire and still drew a blank with all of the above.
What document do you find Ella's birthplace as Lough Tummel?
[a few minutes later]
I've had a look at the 1905 marriage certificate from North Berwick, and I see Lough Tummel is the usual residence at the time of the marriage. If that is the only place Lough Tummel shows up, then it is 23 years after her birth. She could have been born anywhere.
Does the name McVean show up on any other document for her? The registrar's writing doesn't make the V of McVean very clear on Ella's name or her parents' names. Looking at other B's on the page, McBean seems unlikely. There are no other V's to compare with. Another possibility that I considered was an L, as in McLean, but on looking at the other L's on the page, that is very unlikely. So McVean remains the best possibility.
All the best,

The TalkingScot website had to be rebuilt last month after our hosts shut down without warning The Gallery has not been re-installed yet. It is on the "to do" list, just not yet.susieq wrote:I've tried to up load the image of Ellas marriage cert, but the gallery tab does not seem to be working?![]()
