Use of the word "Best" in death records
Best appears after the name of many deceased in death records circa 1790. Can anyone tell me what it means? Thanks for any assistance.

Hi Bill,
Welcome to TalkingScot.
The best will probably be describing the mortcloth hired from the church. I take it the records you have seen are like a set of accounts. The fee paid will be for the mortcloth hire.
More can be found on the forum regarding this if you do a search (button at top of forum) for mortcloth.
All the best,
AndrewP
