Winning m Sneddon

Post by katjw » Sun Apr 19, 2009 1:30 pm

Hi everyone,
I am trying to locate the marriage cert (and Ann's bc) of Thomas Winning and Ann Sneddon, married (according to several of their children's birth certs) April 1851. Various locations are Woodhall Old Monkland; Holytown; and Bothwell. I have tried the IGI, and SP, and used every combination of wildcards I could think of - especially with Sneddon. I already have Thomas' parents but Ann is being difficult, the names given on her dc I believe are incorrect as the informant was her son-in-law and she was in her eighties when she died.
I have found her in every census from 1851 - 1901, her birthplace is Old Monkland in each one and approximate year of birth is 1833. According to the 51 census her mother's name is Jane, no mention of her father.
I have tried every combination of her surname - Snaddon, Sneddan, Sheddon, etc and have run out of ideas.
Hopefully a fresh pair of eyes might be able to point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Katrina [help]

Given the unusual name of one of her twin sons could this be Ann in 1841.
It find it strange though that none of her daughters are named Jane/Jean.

Piece: SCT1841/625 Place: Bothwell -Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 2b
Civil Parish: Bothwell Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Holytown
Folio: 10 Page: 2
Address: No 3 Upper Row Carnbroe

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
SNEDDON John M 45 Coal Miner Lanarkshire
SNEDDON Jean F 45 Lanarkshire
SNEDDON Elizabeth F 20 Lanarkshire
SNEDDON Crawford M 20 Coal Miner Outside Census County (1841)
SNEDDON David M 15 Coal Miner Lanarkshire
SNEDDON Robert M 12 Coal Miner Lanarkshire
SNEDDON Ann F 10 Lanarkshire
SNEDDON James M 7 Lanarkshire
SNEDDON Christian F 15 Lanarkshire
SNEDDON Agness F 15 Lanarkshire

Might be worth 5 credits to check Crawford's death to see how the parents names compare.

Annette

Hi Annette,

I will certainly be coughing up credits to look at that one, it looks very promising and there are a lot of names there I haven't seen before. The three brothers that I do know about are there and the ages are right considering I know they rounded ages down for that census. Fingers crossed! [-o<

Sorry I seem to have got you all excited for nothing. :( I can't find Crawford anywhere after that 1841 census although submissions to the IGI state he married Catherine Neilson.

Regards,
Annette

The Crawford Sneddon / Catherine Neilson marriage shows up in the OPRs - Bothwell parish, a few weeks before the 1841 census.

All the best,

A couple of other people are interested in the Crawford Sneddon – Catherine Neilson family.

Crawford Sneddon Jr. (1847-1898) of Bothwell (outside Glasgow) and my maternal great-grandfather, Robert Moffat (1864-1932), had a common mother: Catherine Nielsen [Nelson] of Glasgow (1824-1901). Sneddon had two brothers, John and David, who in 1871 emigrated to the US (Iowa). Could these be ancesters of yours?

And.

Husband: Crawford Sneddon
Born: ABT 1816 at: Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Wife: Katherine Nelson
Born: BEF 1829
CHILDREN
Name: David Sneddon
Born: 13 AUG 1849 at: Calder, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Married: 14 NOV 1874 at: Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa
Spouses: Carrie Kate Chew

(See the notes against David Sneddon for 1900 US Census info.)

Hope that comes in handy,

Hi everyone,
Annette, I was wondering where you got your info on the 1841 census, I tried looking for that family on SP and Ancestry and came up with a blank.

I'll try and type everything out logically as it's going round in circles in my head at the moment. I have a 51 census which I am very confident is my Ann as the town she lives in (Maggies Haugh) is also where Thomas Winning lived in 51. In fact they were married 2 weeks after the census was taken. The details of this census are:

Sneddon Jane 52yrs Born Glasgow Lanark Sambourer
Sneddon Robert Son 21yrs Born Glasgow Lanark coal miner
Sneddon Ann Daughter 18yrs born Old Monkland Lanark
Sneddon James Son 15yrs born New Monkland Lanark coal miner
Sneddon Charles Son 11yrs Born bothwell Lanark

Parish #652 Civil parish Old Monkland Town Maggies Haugh County Lanarkshire Address Maggies Haugh

I went looking for the opr births but the only one I could find was Charles which stated his parents were John Sneddon and Jane Jamieson.

So, when I got home today I started looking for Crawford Sneddon and I found one on IGI, Crawford Jamieson Sneddon born 1816 to parents John Sneddon and Margaret Jamieson.
AAAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!

Sorry, Alan, - bit quick to hit submit. (Try saying that fast!)
Thanks for the info you posted, once I confirm Crawford as one of mine I will follow it up, I don't have access to the US records on Ancestry and I had no luck finding his death on SP. You wouldn't think there would be more than one Crawford Sneddon - probably related just to be difficult.
Cheers,
Katrina

Should have said I got it from FREECEN (it's transcribed as Sneddan at Ancestry) and yes I followed the family on to 1851 at Maggie's Haugh.

The problem with this family is there are no OPR's indexed at the IGI before statutory registration but I am fairly sure that is you Ann and family in 1841.

Annette
