Hello Anne,

No insult to you intended, but that summarises beautifully the legal profession!

None taken but have you never tried to get a medic to explain to you in English what is wrong with you or your child? I'm sure the same applies to many professions. We all have our jargon or terms of art as lawyers call them. I spend my life reading Social Work reports which are not jargon free!

Hi

I decided to obtain the NZ notice of the intention to marry for the couple (his second marriage, her first), to see if the groom gave the place / date of his divorce. Yes he did - the first marriage was dissolved in Edinburgh - decree absolute granted 5 March 1921.

Fiona :D :D
I'm currently researching Sutherland, Davidson, Baillie (Kilsyth), Wilson (Dunoon), Paton (Dunoonn) in Scotland.

Exellent that you have that piece of information but no such thing as decree absolute in Scotland. There is only one decree and we have no concept of decree nisi or decree absolute. Here you're divorced totally when you're divorced. I guess he had to give the info in a form which was comprehensible to a system based on English Law.

Good morning Anne

Thanks very much for your reply. Where would I obtain a copy of the divorce papers? The divorce occurred in Edinburgh in 1921. In NZ I understand that access to divorce documents is restricted for 60 - 70 years after the event. Probably Scotland has a similar type of time restriction?

Here are some happy faces - it's a beautiful morning here! 8) 8) :D 8)

Hi Fiona

The records of this divorce proceeding will be held at National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh.

An email to enquiries@nas.gov.uk in the first instance is your next step. It should be possible for them to supply you with photocopies for a reasonable fee.

David
