Street names, or places I'm not sure of the spelling

On the 1861 census Alexander's mom and dad had gotten married. His mom didn't have a profession, but his dad was a day laborer.

I'm glad you gave me more map web sites to look at. I was having problems manuvering through the http://www.old-maps.co.uk site. I have some old maps of counties and the parishes that are in them. But because I don't live in Scotland I sometimes get lost not knowing what area to even look at.

Do you have their marriage? it should say on that what her address and occupation were.

Even us Scots get a little lost in unfamiliar areas so a quick 'google' or look at a modern map can often point you in the right direction.
And if in doubt give us a shout on here - we love a challenge!

I'm walking down towards Quarryhead tomorrow so depending on the weather I might get a photo [it's forecast showers and Shieldhill is high, so if the clouds are down I'll see nothing!].

Then she'll have worked in the farm house, or maybe around the dairy or whatever.
We tend to think it's only the well-to-do that employ servants, but in those days the work load would have been too much for just the farmer's wife.

Does the Quarryhead farm only raise animals, or do they grow food to sell too? It would be nice to actually see the place where my great grandfather was born. I hope you can take the picture tomorrow. Thank you for trying. You would post it on TalkingScot Gallery, right? Not through an e-mail. I'm still getting used to using this web site.

I did take some photos last week but it was dull so they didn't turn out too well.
It is MUCH brighter today so I fortunately had remembered my camera this morning, and took one for you.
The present Quarryhead building looks far too new to have been the original! though it might well have just been extended and renovated or completely rebuilt.
I wasn't that close to it as although it's near Shieldhill, you don't reach it from the village proper.
I could have gone over the gate and along the farm track - but in white trainers I wasn't risking it

The large shed beside it was, I think, once part of the Peat Moss works on that part of the Gardum Moss, there was a narrow gauge railway working there until fairly recent years, though the firm is now defunct and machinery is away.
I don't think Quarryhead has been a working farm for generations now, first the coal mines would have taken over, then the peat moss industry was there. Now it's reverting back to nature!
The other farm nearby, Burnside seems to farm all the land, it's pretty rough and high up so he just seems to have young cattle and some sheep.

Hello Rhonda,

Mine is acting strangely as well. I’m getting a different print preview to what is on screen (almost blank) and different behaviour using different browsers. In fact the only way it will print properly for me is by using Firefox and the Print button on the File menu at the top left corner of the screen.

I’ve never printed one of these before so I don’t know how ‘normal’ this is. You could try using the PrintScreen key and paste it into a Paint program and print it from there although that will probably be a bit fiddly.

The most interesting way may be to install Google Earth http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Google ... earth.html Then type Shieldhill Falkirk into the search box and you’ll see the farm directly south of the western end of the town. Zoom in from there and it looks as though it will print very nicely.
