I feel this has got to be John in 1851 -
Name: John Mitchell
Age: 2
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1849
Relationship: Grandson
Gender: Male
Where born: Paisley, Renfrewshire
Parish Number: 569
Civil Parish: Kilmalcolm
County: Renfrewshire
Address: South Branchall
ED: 1
Page: 8 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 23
Line: 15
Roll: CSSCT1851_121
Household Members:
Name Age
Joseph Holm 72
Isabel Holm 66
James Holm 22
Janet Holm 29
Willm Holm 14
John Mitchell 2
Lesley, I wonder if the 10 months was meant to be 10 weeks in 1851 although it states 11 months at Ancestry - (under Mischell).
Regards,
Annette

Before the Presumption of Life Limitation (Scotland) Act anyone whose death could not be proven was presumed to live a natural life span possibly extending to up to 80 to 100 years. Therefore if the person only disappeared with a sum of money he or she is unlikely to have been presumed dead since it must be an equal likelihood that he or she legged it with the cash.
Even today I think someone might have difficulty getting someone presumed dead who disappeared in those circumstances.

Annette you have the correct Holm in South Branchall that is the address given for Mary Holm when she married James Mitchell. I've tried to get the 1851 census you quoted in Scotlands People but get no result. Other than my ineptness any ideas why that might be? We are gaining more knowledge of the family but are we any closer to the missing James. I've only been family history for a few months so bear with me if I ask what you might see as questions obvious answers.

Hi john,
Mmm....I see what you mean.
Hopefully it's them.
As for 1861 - the family you found seems the most likely but confusing. James junior is easy to follow after that but John????
Would you mind uploading the image to the gallery?
One other thing is have you checked the death of the James Mitchell age 30 who died at Paisley in 1856?
Regards,
Annette

Hi John
Instructions for uploading images to the gallery (and a whole host of other things you might like to know!) are in the "How to.." section. Here's a link to the post you need:

Do you know James's mother's name then?havingbeen wrote:Annette

John
Sorry about the confusion re the census image but I really meant the 1861 showing the Mary Mitchell you found.

Annette
