Hi again Gillian
Here are a few more wee bits for you to work on. And dinna worry about me using my lunch break to hunt out bits and pieces lol – the company I work for moved out from a fairly central location in Aberdeen to Altens industrial estate last year – so there’s no much to do at a lunchtime – its takes ages to get anywhere so its better spending time on the pc than being stuck in traffic getting nowhere fast lol.
Finally found your Benjamin in 1871, on Ancestry.co.uk – but boy did he make it hard going – got him in the end by looking for his father James. Still in Jarrow it seems, I found James Gilveray 42, Flora Gilveray 24 & B Gilveray 16, all born in Scotland.
Okay so now James has a new wife – tried looking on IGIs for this and found
31/12/1869 James Gillivray married Flora Ainslie in Aberdeen. You will find this on SP – but its registered in 1870.
Next looked for death of Margaret Walker – found on SP in 1869 in Aberdeen - Margaret Gilvray or Walker, James didn’t waste much time remarrying lol.
Also looked on SP for death of James – he died in Aberdeen in 1876 – James Gillivray.
Had a look for Flora in 1881 on Ancestry.co.uk to see if there were any children – found her as Flora Greig, 29 born Inverness, living in Aberdeen, seaman’s wife, with 3 children. James Greig 9, born England, Flora Greig 3 & William Greig 1, both born Aberdeen. James Greig looks like being possibly a son of James going by his age.
Next I tried looking for them in 1891 to see what that revealed – found Flora, still in Aberdeen – BUT with yet another name lol – she is now Flora Dunn married to a George Dunn, 35, born England. The children they have with them are George Dunn 6, Flora Greig 12, William Greig 11, all born Aberdeen, and a James McGilvrey 17, born England.
This looks like being a half brother to Jemima and Benjamin, had a quick look on 1901 census but nothing obvious jumped out – but then again could be spelt in a million different ways lol – and he was shown as being a seaman in 1891 so maybe he was away at sea in 1901.
Had a look on SP for Flora’s other marriages, she married William Greig in Aberdeen in 1876, and George Dunn in Aberdeen in 1884.
From SP there is a likely death for a William Greig aged 34 in 1881 showing as a marine register entry in minor records.
Also from SP – Flora died in Aberdeen in 1891.
Had a wee hunt for Jemima as well and came up with a Jemima Giboney, age 18, born in Aberdeen, boarding in Dundee with a Christie family – need to check and see if any marriages or deaths fit in there.
Checked SP for a possible death for Jemima and came up with Jemima McGilvray or Jolly who died in Dundee in 1913 – right sort of age so looking good. And a marriage in Dundee in 1893 between William Jolly and Jemima Gilvery.
Tried Ancesty.co.uk again and found them in Dundee in 1891 and 1901, Jemima Jolly shown as being born in Aberdeen. There are 2 sons David, b1883 and William b1887, both Dundee.
So you’ll maybe be needing to get some SP credits and start viewing all these records. A wee tip for SP – when searching use *G*L*V*R*Y that covers all options.
Susan.
