Mothers name different than son …..

Post by dnowakowski1 » Thu Apr 12, 2007 2:21 pm

Opinion needed on 1861 Census.
Thomas and Martha Anderson are on the census along with their children. Also on the census listed as "Mother" is Schaw Anderson Goodier (could be Coodain), and I am almost certain her maiden name was Sim.
I am assuming the mother re-married but you know what happens when you assume.....
Thank you
Janet

That's the logical possibility to explore :!:

But remember back then that the use of various terms was quite loose. In this case might it also be Mother-in-Law ?

Schaw seemed (to me) an unusual given name - so searching in 1851
there is a Shaw Goodsir living alone as family head, but on the same page as Thomas, Martha and Children. In 1841 there is a Shaw Sime age 50, born Fife, living Abottshall - occupation given as "keep lodgers" In the household is a Hellan Anderson aged 30

You guys are good. This is the best forum I have ever been on. You gave me lots of food for thought and new places to go fishing. I will let you know how it works out.

I haven't drawn any conclusions yet but it goes to show that many hands make light work. I just went back and looked at my stuff and I have the 1851 census. I must have looked at it a million times and never even thought to make the connection to Shaw Goodsir.

You were all so right. Schaw turns out to be Shaw Goodsir. Her first husband David Anderson died and she married David Goodsir a merchant seaman and they did not have any children.
The only family link in my entire family to date with only one child. Her son Thomas makes up for it though.
Thanks so much, couldn't have done it so quickly without you!!!
