Hi,
From BMD records we can read what ancestors did for a living. However, if you want to find out who they worked for then where do you look?

To be honest, Dennis, the only people in my lot I've been able to identify workplace for were those who lived with their employers (i.e. domestic servants, etc...) or from Poor Relief records.
I can't think of any sources you might try, but I'm sure someone will be along soon who might be able to help.

That all depends on the occupation involved!!
The professions are generally well recorded through their professional institutions.
Trades, especially in the royal burghs, and to a lesser extent in the "ordinary" burghs of barony can be well recorded through burgess records, apprenticeship records, incorporations of trades' records, always assuming that these have survived, - mostly, if they have, in local and national archives.
For even quite lowly occupations such as ploughmen, there could have very likely been a local association, but the eternal question is whether any records have survived. (Whenever I'm asked if I have any aristocratic connections, my standard answer is "Yes, I'm descended from a long line of aristocrats, the ploo'men o' the Mearns", - that generally stops folk dead in their tracks who are only interested in connecting into Robert The Bruce
)
And there's lists of the police in the Glasgow police forces, and lists of mendicants in the Lothians, and much, much more out there on the great www
For particular occupations, e.g. watchmakers, you will find that one or more interested folk have invested considerable time and effort in listing all that is known of the history of the trade.
Getting back more to the specific question asked here, the records of many companies have been deposited with local archives, including university archives.
For a "lowly" shoemaker in, say, Auchenshuggle, never discount local street and trade directories, nor the main national directory that covered Scotland, - Slater's
But, above all else, there's only three requirements, - Google, Google, and Google
David
PS Mary's suggestion re the info that can be found in Poor Relief records is excellent in terms of possibly identifying an employer.

Thank you Mary & David:)
I'd strayed from the original topic 'Who All Lived There' . The question for that particular topic would have been how do I find out who lived on Maryhill Rd in a particular year? What records did landlords keep, and were the records considered to be their's to dispose of as they saw fit or were they also used for other than rent-keeping?

Hi Dennis,
The 1881 Census on SP can be searched on street name. There is also the Glasgow Valuation Rolls for 1913, if Glasgow is the area you have an interest at http://www.theglasgowstory.co.uk/valind ... 358bc5fd36
