paupers .....

Post by margaretmccue » Thu Jul 27, 2006 4:19 pm

Hi all. does any one know why an old person would be classed as a pauper on the census form. even though they have an address. and appear to be living with family. I have come across two such members of my family. one was 85 and the other was 71. is this another word for
O.A.P. doesnt sound very nice does it. [food for thought] cheers margaret.
 P.S. They were both classed as head of house.

Hi Margaret
They would have been living at home and in receipt of "outdoor relief" from their Parish ... this would have been money or clothes etc.
It is possible that the person's family could not afford to support them.
The term OAP would not have existed in those days..( I have one ancestor on census who was a labourer aged 90).

The paupers "poor relief application" may have survived and would give you an insight of their circumstances.

Hi

An annuitant is someone who receives a yearly payment. This might be from a previous employer or through some kind of trust perhaps set up on someone's death.
