Post by carmentea32 » Tue Jul 04, 2006 11:17 am

any clues as to how this surname might be spelt in the 1841 census, I've tried Sampson, Samsone, Simson ....
looking for Thomas samson son of Peter and Agnes, born around 1833 in Ayrshire.

It looks like you have covered most of the possibilities. In case of any other spelling variation as yet untried, have you tried searching using wildcards? Try S*m*s*n* where "*" can stand for any amount of letters or none.

All the best,

no I haven't, only used sa*mson*. Will have a shot and see. Thanks.
Any idea if the Ancestry 1841 census and the SP one are the same?

In theory they are from the same source material, but were indexed independently. From what I have read, there is a greater amount of mis-transcriptions in the Ancestry index.

Another index to consider is Freecen (someone will come up with an address for that). Freecen have indexed a fair amount of Scotland's 1841 census.

All the best,

Have you considered the slight possibility that the name may have been heard as Sanson? So perhaps the M ought to be wild too?

Just a thought,
