1901 census .....

Post by djcrtoye » Mon Jul 03, 2006 11:36 am

Have found out that Rose ann Gallagher and son Matthew are not on the census. Matthew was born in Coatbridge 1895 and the next time we see them is in 1920. Is there any reason why they are not on this census. ](*,)

The most likely explanation is that they are there somewhere, with some other variation of spelling of their names.

Gallagher, Gallacher, Gallocher to name a few choices. Probably safer to try wildcard searches, such as Gal*r - that will take in many possibilities. Spelling variations can occur on the original census documents or in the indexing process.

As for the first names, Rose Ann give a number of variations, such as Roseann, Roisin (I think I have spelled that correctly for the Irish version). I have seen Matthew spelled with only one "t" in it. So for the first names, consider trying Ros*n* and Mat*hew.

Of course they may be missing from the census. Could they have been outside Scotland at the time? Or did the census enumerator miss their house out? I have a household which was almost certainly missed by the enumerator in 1871 in my family tree - the house is missing from the group of neighbouring houses that it is with in the other censuses and no sign of the family, where there were births marriages and deaths at that house either side of the 1871 census.

All the best,

I have lots of Gallachers in my tree also from Lanarkshire and it can be a bit labourious going through them all to you get the right ones. So far I have Gallacher, Gallagher, Gallaucher, Gallaugher, Gallocher, Galloher and mysteriously and thanks to Jack they were known as Galloway in the 1861 census. Most of my indiscriminate searches have centred round 1841-61 so if there are any other Gallachers out there you are looking for let me know and I will have a look. I went through 90 credits in 24 hours trying to pin them down not that long ago.
