1841 census on Ancestry? .....

Post by Tom-W » Thu Jun 08, 2006 3:49 pm

I've just been on ancestry.co.uk looking for a few stray relatives and under recently added databases I noticed "1841 Scotland Census" which was added today.

It doesn't appear to work at the moment (maybe because I'm on a pay-per-view sub) but does anyone know what exactly they've added - is it an index, FreeCen data? I'm assuming it is not the images as per SP.

Hi Tom-W

 I dunno but I just peeked at it and the index works fine. My Keltie family is right there in Fife. I don't have a sub or even a pay per view voucher to didn't get to see any records.....but they sure have an index! Couldn't say how complete it all is.

Best wishes

I've just been back on myself. I think it covers the whole country - ran a few test names and got similar numbers of hits to SP.

Not sure of the quality of the index - already found one Square transcribed as Squon - but could be very useful resource for double checking entries before buying the image from SP e.g. it lets you view all names at an address.

Hi all
I might be wrong and "on a hunch" here, 'cos I've not checked or looked at the site, but I know Ancestry use free BMD as one of their sources - is their 1841 maybe from the Freecen transcriptions?

Best wishes

It's definitely more than FreeCen e.g. FreeCen has no Clackmannan data and this does. I've been cross checking some of my own families and they are all on the site but not on FreeCen.

Frustratingly there's nothing on the site to explain what kind of index it is!

Hi Tom
Down the bottom of this page:
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1004
it mentions:
Source Information:
Ancestry.com. 1841 Scotland Census [database online]. Provo, Utah: MyFamily.com, Inc., 2006. Original data: Scotland. 1841 Scotland Census. Reels 1-151. General Register Office for Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland.
But I'm not sure that I'm any the wiser! :?
Has it come from LDS sources?
Best wishes
Lesley

I still have a few credits left over.... I can search the records but I'm not able to purchase an 1841 census image...

Maybe Ancestry do not have the rights over the actual images :-k

There's nothing to prevent Ancestry from using the microfilms to create their own index as the info is public domain.

But will 1851 et. seq. now follow ??.........

I have a full membership to Ancestry but cannot see the original, still about time something Scottish was put on. Still I do wish we had an English version of Scotlands People.

There seems to be a problem viewing the images - the index is working fine at first glance. I have a full UK subscription, so the viewing problem isn't because of pay-per-view, no credits etc. The facility to view other members of a household is working, so as Tom says, useful for cross checking before paying on SP. But it looks as though they intend the image to be available - just got a gremlin maybe :?:
