confused on this one

Post by MaryB » Sat Feb 18, 2006 12:29 pm

Birth Neil McEwan Gage b. 1/6/1870 (b Greenock) mother Amor (Emma) Gage, wife of William Henry Pearce (Wm not the father) no marriage date

Neil is listed on the IGI as Neil McEwan Pearce as is his siblings (curnow pearce). 2 of his siblings birth cert list a marriage, which I have sent away for.

Neil's marriage cert - father William Curnow mother Susan??? Gage although looks like Sage

Emma's death cert - married to William Henry Pearce parents John Gage/Jane Kitchencom (think the kitchencom is wrong) and the english marr cert won't help :(

This is from the IGI

William Henry PEARCE married Emma GAGE

Hi Mary,

Here are the parents in the 1881 census (from the LDS CDs), an older daughter and son-in-law. No sign of the children that you have listed. Had they died young? Or were they elsewhere?
  • Dwelling: Langwell Close 1st Low Door
Census Place: Middle Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203569 GRO Ref Volume 564-1 EnumDist 6 Page 2
    Marr Age Sex Birthplace
    Wm.H. PEARCE M 57 M England
    Rel: Head
    Occ: Seaman Merchantile
    Erna PEARCE M 55 F England
    Rel: Wife
    Occ: Seaman Wife
James MUNRO M 27 M Keith, Banff, Scotland
    Rel: Son In Law
    Occ: Seaman Merchantile
    Jane MUNRO M 18 F England
    Rel: Daur
    Occ: Seaman Wife
    Margt. TAYLOR U 46 F England
    Rel: Servant
    Occ: Domestic Servant
To add to the list of names for the mother - this one is E-r-n-a (not Ema as it may look). You would need to view the census microfilm to see if that is a transcription error or if that is what the enumerator wrote.

Added later:
Deaths found on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk that are most likely this family.
  • FANNY PEARCE, 1868, age 0, Greenock
GEORGE PEARCE, 1873, age 1, Greenock
All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Thanks Andrew. I had an idea that George and Fanny died young. Minnie the other daughter never married, and I think she was born England as well. Jane on the census, is my gt grandmother

Neil I found on the 1881 census, as Neil Gage, in the naughty boy's home

Emma/Erna/Amor - with the Cornish/Kent accent, goodness knows what the name is
Black Isle - Beaton Bethune Campbell
Inverness - Mackintosh
Aberdeen - Mitchell Leslie
Ireland - Cosgrove McGuire
Southshields - Patterson/Pattieson Campbell Sloan
Greenock - Boyle McPhail Blair McKechnie Clark
