Hi Anne
Perhaps, I do not know. However, that said, I have a Birth Extract for their son William born 24 July 1857 at Ballantrae and his mother is listed as "Isabella McCreadie maiden name Welsh", not "formerly Welsh" and not the usual "ms".

Why the children would be listed under her maiden surname beats me!

Thanks and looking forward to seeing what you can locate in 1861 Census. William should be there age around 4 years. I wonder in whose surname the children will be listed in 1861 Census.

Jim

H Jim
Have you tried a search for them on Scotlands People? Remember you can do a search for one person and also one other first name that appears on the on the same page now, which I find helps narrow down results a good deal.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Jim,

I kept coming up with this 1861 census last night, but as you can see, Isabella's husband seems to be a William, and the age is way out. I would take Lesley's advice and take a look at the real thing on SP, since so far, I'm not coming up with anything else.

Name: William McCreadie
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831
Relationship: Son
Spouse's name : Isabella
Father's Name: John
Mother's Name: Mary
Gender: Male
Where born: Ballantrae, Ayrshire
Registration Number: 579
Registration district: Ballantrae
Civil Parish: Ballantrae
Town: Ballantrae
County: Ayrshire
Address: Foreland
Occupation: Fisherman
ED: 1
Page: 20 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 125
Line: 18
Roll: CSSCT1861_83
Household Members: Name Age
Jane Eaglesham 15
Alexander McCreadie 6
Isabella McCreadie 34
John McCreadie 76
John McCreadie 12
Mary McCreadie 88
Mary McCreadie 11
William McCreadie 30
William McCreadie 2

As to Isabella's maiden name Welsh...don't discount the fact that they may have simply lived together as man and wife without the benefit of marriage. I have a Finlay/McNaughton lot who have eight children, all of whom have her surname of McNaughton, and all except two, have the middle name of Finlay. On each census, she appears as "housekeeper" and not "wife", but on the DC's she is stated as his wife, although, I've yet to find an MC for them....I actually doubt they were ever married. If I were you, I would be having a look at all the children's BC's to see what's on there.

Regards,
Anne H

Here's something a bit odd in 1861. John has become William, ages are way off except for the children-- But I don't see any other hopefuls in 1861 in Ballantrae. What do you think? Does the niece make any sense to you?

1861
Foreland, Ballantrae, Ayrshire
John McCreadie, 76, Head, born Ballantrae, Ayrshire, Thatcher
Mary McCreadie, 88, Wife, born Ballantrae, Ayrshire, House Keeper
William McCreadie, 30, Son, born Ballantrae, Ayrshire, Fisherman
Isabella McCreadie, 34, Wife, born Girvan, Ayrshire, Cotton Weaver
John McCreadie, 12, Son, born Ballantrae, Ayrshire, Pirn Winder
Mary McCreadie, 11, Daughter, born Ballantrae, Ayrshire, scholar
Alexander McCreadie, 6, Son, born Ballantrae, Ayrshire, scholar
William McCreadie, 2, Son, born Ballantrae, Ayrshire
Jane Eaglesham, 15, Niece, born Ballantrae, Ayrshire

Here's Anthony on a ship:

1861
ED: Rose
Civil Parish: Vessels
Ayr, Ayrshire
Anthony Mc Crandie, 16, born Ballantrae, Ayrshire, Seaman

All the best,
Sarah

Oh! I see Anne has posted in the meantime! We were looking at the same family

Hi Sarah,

At least we're coming up with the same census. I think Jim needs to have a peek at the real thing on SP this time :)

Great, I see you found Anthony also :) never thought to look for him.

Anne H

Hello Jim,

John Mccreadie, Married Isabella Welsh, 18/Nov/1842. well thats what someone put on the IGI.

Then again there are a couple of submissions for the births of William, and John, Mccreadie, with parents John, and Isabella Walsh.

Its perhaps most likely that John Mccreadie, died sometime between 1857, and 1861, there are three deaths in Ayrshire, for John Mccreadie's, in this timeframe.

One in particular aged round about what your John would be.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hello Jim,

I just found another submission for young Mary Ferguson Mccreadie, born 1850 Ballantrae, to John, and Isabella Welsh. they all fit in with the census provided above.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hi Jim,

There is this extracted Marriage entry on IGI:

Isobella WELCH m John McCREDIE 18 Nov 1842, Ballantrae

(I searched for a marriage for Isobella only as there are too many variants for McCreadie which don't all show up on IGI)

There is also this marriage listed for an Isabella Welsh which probably has nothing to do with anything, but bacause of Marys middle name Ferguson, thought I would point it out:

Isabella WELSH m James FERGUSON 21 Feb 1873, Ayr.
