1851/61/census edinburgh please
Hi. I am looking for George Brunton born 1830 in Edinburgh. I think he remained in Edinburgh so hopefully he can be located on the census. I dont know if he was married or not. Many thanks. Pamela

Hi Pamela
Do you know for sure it was Edinburgh. The name Brunton was important in Musselburgh to do with the wire mills there.
There is a George Brunton who fits that time span buried in the churchyard in Inveresk. I noticed it last week when I was through there.
Do you know what his occupation was

Hi Pamela
Why not join and try searching? If you find nothing that looks likely it will cost you nothing at all. You only need to pay if you want to see the images of records and unfortunately we are all in the same boat with that one!
You can also order census films from your local LDS centre for a small fee, although that is not a path I think I'd recommend when searching for someone in Edinburgh: you could be there a lifetime!
There is a George Brunton aged 11 in St Cuthberts Parish in Edinburgh in 1841 on Scotlands People. I was able to establish this using the free search facility, but as I only have 1 credit left just now, I can't view it.
Best wishes
Lesley
Scotlands People is free to join and free to search. There is no subscription - it is a pay-as-you go web site, so you only need to pay if you want to view a record. The minimum charge is £6 for 30 credits and thsoe credits last for, as far as I remember, 90 days. If used carefully and wisely those 30 credits could let you see 5 original documents.I dont have a subsription for scotlands people.

Don't forget that Ancestry.com has indexed all the Scottish censuses too. You can't view an image of the orginal with them but you can usually find the folks you're looking for if you allow for some of their creative spellings!
Didn't I just read on TalkingScot somewhere of a free 3 day trial with ancestry just now??
And if that fails.....perhaps you may be in luck with your local library as they may have an inhouse subscription for use by their patrons.
And then of course when all that fails.....there is the old standby Family History Centers where you can order in census microfilms and go at it the old fashioned way!
Best wishes

Hello Pamela,
I haven’t been able to help with your specific question but here’s some bits and pieces you may not have seen all of.
The 1836 edition of ‘The Gentleman’s Magazine’ records George Brunton Snr. as having died 1836.
‘Deaths Abroad ………June 2, at Paris, Mr G. Brunton, Editor of the Edinburgh Patriot’.
http://www.google.com.au/books?id=qaklr ... patriot%22
You’ll find George Snr. on a list at http://www.scottap.com/family/Lanark/ML ... nts2A.html
These are apparently to do with Edinburgh Commissary Court for Midlothian. (and on SP appears to be under Edinburgh Sheriff Court Inventories for 1836)
‘George BRUNTON sometime Editor of Edinburgh Patriot Newspaper & sometime res Broughton Pl, Edin d Paris 2 Jun 1836. Jane ALEXANDER otherwise BRUNTON res Edin relict of defunct’
If you go to this link you’ll find an advert for The Edinburgh Patriot on Page 31 and 32.
http://www.google.com.au/books?id=xbys1 ... A1-PA32,M1
And Lesley, I just checked FreeCen after I saw your post and the 11 year old at St. Cuthbert’s is there under ‘Geo’ at ‘John Watson's Public Institution’ whatever that is? If that isn’t him there’s a 50 y.o. Janet Brunton and 15 y.o. George living in Cockpen. What would be the chances George was rounded by mistake and rounded up to 15. The neighbour’s ages seem to be all over the place.
Hope there’s something in there that is of use,
Alan

Hi All Thank you for your help. I will register for Scotlands people. I interpereded it as having to pay to search an as I dont have a credit card gave it a miss. Will check out ancestry. Thanks agin.
Thank for the death notice for george in PAris.
The institution in 1841 seems likely for george aged 11 if his father had not long died. I wonder where his mother and sisters are.Ill check the rounded ages version. Cheers Pamela
