There is no mention of it at all in Blacks Surnames of Scotland although it does have Bog and Bogie

Scotlands People free surname search shows only 6 entries in the 1841 census and 3 in 1851.

There are only 2 births in the opr's (pre 1855) and 2 deaths/burials for the same period

What about Bogen or Bogan? What is the most recurrent first name and likely place of family origin, or even the only first name you know? It is possible it's been mis-indexed.

For what time frame are you looking?

Thanks for those comments.
The era in question is 1850.
I have noticed that the OCR used by National Library of Australia sometimes interprets the name BOGNE as BOGUE and vice versa.
My query relates to a memorial inscription that is Mary Bogne.

Hello Piperpaul,

In English and Welsh records at FreeBMD the early instances of the surname Bogne tend to be from the Northumberland-Durham region. There are only seven events pre 1907. It would be an easy name to mis-transcribe. Bogue can look very much like Bogne when written as does Boyne and there’s no great shortage of those in Scotland.

In the Scottish newspapers there’s reference in 1814 to a Frenchman M. de Bogne, and in 1822 there’s another Frenchman surname Bogne de Fay. There are many hits from the search but 99% at least of them are Bogue or some other vaguely similar word the OCR has read as Bogne.

All the best,
Alan

Thanks Alan,
The person to whom the Inscription referred has been known as Bogue in the past. Then I noticed the inscription on their stone, when enlarged, read Bogne and I must say the lady's handwriting on her marriage registration could be interpreted as Bogne!
My research is in it's final stages and this query came out of left field when I was tinkering with cropping a picture of the stone!
Perhaps an handwritten instruction to the memorial manufacturer was interpreted as 'Bogne".
Based on the statistics you have mentioned and the fact her husband was from Fifeshire it is most likely to mean "Bogue".
I will keep 'Bogne' in the back of my mind just in case though.
Regards,
PaulS
