Toozling in Strathaven.
Word certainly gets round, this is from a New Zealand newspaper ‘Colonist’, 30th October, 1863. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bi ... --1----0--

Re: Toozling in Strathaven
Seems a lot of toozling went on in Strathaven - and not only that - rolling on the floor and some tumbling about!
Thanks for posting that Alan - I loved it!

Hi Mate.
You have found yet another example of why there is always hope. The year 1863, and on the other side of the world, you get an account of what was happening in Scotland. Names and their places of residence, are always of interest to a genealogist. The surnames mentioned are all names I associate with settlers in the Auckland area, so possibly another incentive to print.
What a brilliant example of court reporting. Did you find the Edinburgh papers account that had been copied. It would be interesting to see how long the "NEWS" took to get to NZ?

Re: Toozling in Strathaven
Hello all,
I’m glad you enjoyed the toozling story.
The case was heard July 27th and 28th, and was reported in great detail in the Caledonian Mercury (Edinburgh), on July 28 and 29th, 1863.
I’d say the NZ newspaper would have included most of the juicy bits.
All the best,
Alan

Hi Again.
Thanks Alan.
It appears that the Caledonion Mercury papers had a fast trip out that time. [Three months] In 1842 the Jane Gifford with William & Jane SHARP as passengers, left the Clyde on June 9th arriving at Auckland on October 9th. [Four months.]
